About

Berlin GAA was founded in Autumn 2014 by Christopher Hennessey of Listowel, Kerry who found himself in Berlin with the urge to kick a football and the energy to start a club! Berlin GAA received official recognition and accreditation as a GAA club from Croke Park on the 5th of November, 2014 and, following this, the club was also awarded the status of “gemeinnütziger Verein” (charitable association) according to German law. Since it’s foundation, Berlin GAA has gone from strength to strength with the development of mens and ladies football teams as well as hurling and camogie, competing in football and hurling tournaments in the South Eastern European league as well as the Pan-Euros. Our membership consists of almost 50/50 men and women, and we are incredibly proud to be such an international club with members from all over the world including: Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, Germany, Italy, Taiwan and Australia. Christopher Hennessey sadly passed away on the 17th of January 2015 following a short illness. As well as one of our founders, he was a vibrant member of the club and the European GAA scene in general. Chris’ family and friends knew how important Berlin GAA was to him and they very kindly raised the money for our mens’ kit. These jerseys sport no logo, rather the words; “Friends of Cristóir Ó hAonghusa”, of which we are very proud. Our ladies’ jerseys also carry the name “Christóir Ó hAonghus” on the arm. Furthermore, an annual friendly hurling tournament was established in October 2015 and given the name “The Chris Hennessey Cup”. The first tournament was played in Dresden, one year following Berlin GAA’s first outing as a club at the same venue. We are happy to say, Berlin GAA were the first winners of the Chris Hennessey cup which is now the German Hurling Cup! No matter how many titles we win, this will always be a particularly special one. In 2015, we covered over 8,000 kilometres competing in tournaments all around Europe and we hosted our own friendly tournament on home soil in Berlin. In 2016, we are competing in even more tournaments across Europe. We are also delighted to say that Berlin GAA will be hosting the South/East Regional Gaelic Football League Finals as well as the Benelux Ladies Gaelic Football League Finals on 11th of June, 2016. Berlin GAA is always delighted to welcome new members! Please come down and join us at training regardless of whether you’re a former inter-county player or a complete beginner. Our excellent coaching staff, our team captains and all our players will make you welcome from the off. Bígí linn, komm vorbei!
