Roger Casements GAA club was founded by Father Maguire in Coventry in 1956 at our Lady of Assumption Church social club and named after the great Irish Revolutionary. The original club was founded as a football and hurling club and for the last 55 years the club has competed in the Warwickshire leagues. The club quickly grew with the high number of Irish Immigrants in Coventry at the time and the club provided a great link to the cultures and people from home. As with all clubs in this country who rely on the Irish Diaspora players and club members come and go regularly and the make up of the club is constantly changing. There are however plenty of men and women who have stayed in Coventry to make Roger Casements their home club. Current Life President Bill Fahy joined the club in its infancy and is still heavily involved in the club today 55 years. The list of Vice Presidents give you a list of people such as Paddy Browne, Eamon Boyle, Bernie & Margaret Keane and Martin Grogan many of whom have given over 40 years service to the club. The club celebrated its 50th year in 2006 and a book recounting the clubs history during this time was produced. If any club members would like a copy please make contact with us on the website. The club when originally formed was strongest as in hurling and the team competed in the Warwickshire league until 1982. The hurling team was resurrected in 2004 and has competed in the league and championship in Warwickshire every year since then. The greatest success of the club during those early years was winning the Junior league and Championship in 1964 against the odds. There were many other victories throughout the sixties at Junior level when Casements boasted a strong team. Lately the hurlers have had success in winning the Houlihan Cup, which was presented to Warwickshire in memory of Casements club member and County Board Chairman Mick Houlihan. The football club also enjoyed success at junior level in the sixties but the high point for the club came when they won the clubs first Senior Championship in 1978. The club went through some hard times in the late 80's but the determined work of club stalwarts Martin Grogan, Paddy Browne, and Bernie Keane ensured the club survived and recovered again to return to the top division in the early nineties and reached the Championship final again in 1998. Following the achievement of reaching the county final the club was hit hard again when club members from Rugby left to form their own side taking a number of senior players with them. However the club responded again by winning the treble at intermediate level in 2000, capturing the League, Championship and Mulligan Cup, and winning the Warwickshire ‘B' championship in 2001 and 2002. They have remained in the senior league since 2001 and now have senior and reserve teams. In 2004 and 2005 the club managed to capture the Warwickshire Senior Championship again by defeating Sean McDermott's and John Mitchell's in successive finals. The club reached finals in 06 and 08 but lost out narrowly on both occasions. In the early 90's a women's Gaelic football team called Clan na Heirann was formed in Coventry. As there were such strong links with the Club the ladies joined Roger Casements in the late 90's and the team soon secured its first honours by winning the Warwickshire and then historically the Provincial 9-Aside Championship in their first few seasons. Roger Casements ladies won the Warwickshire Ladies league for the first time in 2003 beating John Mitchell's on the last day of the season to secure the title. They bettered this feat in 2004 by capturing the Championship from Mitchell's for the first time a triumph that they repeated in style in the 2008 season. They were also successful in 2009 winning the ladies tournament in Belgium .The ladies have had a huge impact on the club helping it grow in size over the recent years and taking many important positions on the club committee. Roger Casements have had underage teams in the club since the late 1960's and they have always supplied a steady stream of home grown talent for the club, including the likes of Liam Halton who was the Irish Post GAA player of the year in 1978 at 18 years old. The club is now heavily involved in the future of the game in this country and in 2002 launched a scheme within Coventry to coach the games in local schools and develop the under age set up in Coventry. In Autumn 2002, after a break of several years with no underage teams Roger Casements were entered an Under 12 team into a junior tournament in Birmingham without having played a league game, as underdogs of the tournament, they went on to beat established teams and won the trophy at the first outing. Then Joint Manager Liam Carey described the victory as "Better than City winning the Cup in '87". That team captained by Michael McKenna went on to create history by winning the Under-14 Great Britain Club Championship in '04 beating St Benedicts Harps of Leeds 6-11 to 1-3. It was the culmination of a treble winning season having secured the Warwickshire Championship and league earlier that season. Most of that team have graduated into today's senior side. Underage is flourishing today in the club and we field at Under 8, 10, 12, 14 , 16 and 18 level under the guidance of Neil ‘Lofty' Webb, Shay Harnett and Paddy Hoey. The club has had great success at Under 10 and 12 level in past seasons capturing the Warwickshire league and Championship. As the Club enters its 55th year in 2011 it has finally realised an ambition that it has held since its formation. The minutes of meetings over the years recount details of many failed attempts by the club to secure its own playing facilities. The club has reached an agreement with the Sphinx Sports and Social Club to have its own pitch and use the club house facilities for the foreseeable future. This is a major achievement for the club and its is a major chance for the club to grow in the local community and ensure it survives for a further 60 years. 2016 brings another significant period in the clubs history, with it's 60th year.
