Granuaile Hurling Club

London, London, England

About

Granuaile was first founded in 1935 and was predominantly a gaelic football team competing in Hertfordshire. Throughout the following years the club strayed away from football and concentrated on hurling. During the sixties and seventies Granuaile competed in Hertfordshire with huge success winning numerous League, Championship and Miller cup titles. Whilst competing in Hertfordshire was very rewarding for Granuaile, the club had their eye on bigger spoils and games, ie. the London League and Championship. The standard of hurling was improving every year due to the arrival of young men from Ireland and Granuaile wished to capitalise on this and compete in London. In December 1988, after the club had competed for many years in the Hertfordshire league and championship, four men decided to rejuvenate Granuaile Hurling Club and push for inclusion in the London league and Championship, where the competition and standard was far superior to anywhere else in Britain. The four men were Sean Holohan, Pat McKelvey, Pat Delaney and Mick Thornton. The four were quickly joined in their quest by the late Joan McConnon and the late Mick O'Meara. After several rejections and appeals Granuaile were finally granted their wish by the London County Board to compete in the London Intermediate Championship or Senior B championship and leagues in 1989. Granuaile still wearing their traditional Red and White Jersey's had immediate success winning the Senior B League title and the Mickey Connor Cup in 1989. In 1990 Granuaile changed the colour of the club strip to Black and Amber and their fortunes stayed the same winning the Senior B League title and Mickey Connor Cup once again. The Nineties as you will see from the achievements listed below was littered with League titles, Championship titles, Ronan Cup titles, McCullough Cup titles, Oxford Seven titles and finally Mickey Connor Cup titles. In 2000 and 2001 Granuaile were very unlucky not to have any silverware after virtually dominating the previous decade at intermediate level in London. 2002 however was a different story with Granuaile completing a clean sweep of the Intermediate scene in London, winning the Intermediate League title, Championship title and the Ronan Cup.
